The Story of LLMC

Dorothy (Locy Lee) has been teaching Music and Cantonese playgroups in London since 2017. Most of her pupils have a Cantonese speaking family background, with parents wishing their children to have more exposure to the language and culture.

She was searching for good quality teaching materials for children to learn music in Cantonese and, conversley, to learn Cantonese through music. She found that there are many high quality music education methods and amazing curriculums. However, not many were written in Cantonese, which led her to start creating a bespoke set of teaching materials of her very own. She used her profession as a composer and arranger to write this curriculum, adapting the Kodaly philosophy, where she was trained as a Kodaly educator. She continues to research into the relationship between language and music and is always finding ways to apply this study into both disciplines.

Not only will your children highten their musical awareness in pitch and Cantonese tone, but they will also widen their Cantonese vocabulary and extended sentence structure through our carefully designed songs.

Music & Language

You may have heard of the benefit of singing nursery rhymes to little children will help their speech development. Through songs children will learn how language is constructed and it can assist with the acquisition of language through music.

What about Cantonese?

Cantonese is a tonal language with precise pitch discrimination, there are also differences between spoken Cantonese and written Chinese. So we have to carefully select proper materials for the aim of language learning purposes.

I teach language through musical activities inspired by Kodály philosophy and produce my own teaching materials for both music and language purposes. Through engaging and fun games, children are practising the language effortlessly.

Piano

I recommend children to start musicianship training before starting to learn an instrument. One of the most important aspects of music learning is internalisation. The ability to hear musical sounds in one's head truly helps to make a great musician.

Once the child has developed their musical ears to a certain stage, we slowly move onto the piano. We are now taking the songs we have sung onto the piano keys, moving from the voice to the fingers.

In my 1-1 piano lesson, we look into variety of repertoires, learning to read traditional music scores, improvising, composing, learning theory and doing aural training through fun games.

I mainly adopt Piano Safari ApproachColourstrings Piano Method and Piano Adventures in my lessons, depending on the child's interest and ability.

I am also happy to assist students with their ABRSM graded exams, but only if they wish to take this challenge.

Kodály Philosophy

We listen and speak before we learn to read and write. Music is no different, we listen and sing before we learn to read and play. Building musicianship is important for every little musician to develop their musical sensitivity.

I reference Kodaly teaching methods in my piano lessons and in my LLMC music programme.

Through singing songs and playing rhythmic games, children are absorbing the abstract musical concept unconsciously through their voice and body.

We will then move on to the conscious learning stage, starting to name the notes and the rhythm, learning basic notation and theory.

Musicianship training is a lifelong learning journey not only for little children.

Older children learn how to harmonise a melody and analyse chords. This precious skill is helping us to play music by ear, compose and improvise. The skills of a true musician!

2026 April - June

LLMC Locy Lee Music Class

New students? Please contact me and I will arrange a free meeting to go through the class and help you to choose the right class.

LLMC is a progressive learning programme. It is recommended for children to join long term to get the most out of the course, as each level takes about 3-5 terms to complete (1-1.5 years). Each term we will be focusing on a different theme which is accompanied by fresh content.

All the classes are taught online.

Each year consists of 3 terms (Sept - Dec, Jan - March, April - June).

Level 1 (for 3-5 years)

Level 2 (for 4-7 years old )

Level 3 (for 6-8 years old)

The age ranges are just for reference. Please find more info here to check what we are aiming children to achieve in each level. We want to build a strong solid music foundation, with no rush in getting through all the levels!

These games are made to show the expected standard after completing level 1.

Listening Game (Rhythm)

Listening Game (Pitch)

What to expect?

Simple Cantonese Songs & Rhymes

A set of music curricula that is based on Kodaly approach in Cantonese with some modern twists (jazz, blues, pop, etc.). Through singing and games children will learn musical skills such as pulse, rhythm, pitch and basic music reading. Our approach is to give younger children a musical experience, then we will make the learning conscious through the introduction of rhythm and singing names (do re mi).

Add ons: Do Re Mi / Piano Workshop

LLMC Do Re Mi Workshop

Designed for young children in Level 1 class who wish to play the song we learn in class on bells, keyboard or the piano. We learn to play by ears (singing in solfa) with colour coding. Simple and fun!

What Bells should I get?

What Keyboard should I get?

LLMC Piano Workshop

The aim of the Piano Workshop is to bring the joy of early piano learning using Cantonese. Children will be also learning how to read traditional scores, play basic scales and patterns, to help build the foundation for their future musical journey.

We take Max. 4 in a group.

What's next?

What Parents Say

I can't recommend Locy Lee Music Classes more. Dorothy engages the kids in a fun way even on a Zoom environment. My 4yo was hesitant to speak Cantonese at first but since starting the class he has been using Cantonese a lot more and he has been picking up lots of Cantonese phrases from the songs. Locy's songs are very catchy and we have downloaded her songs from her Youtube channel so that we can play in our music player and for car journeys.
